Esme seems
to be enjoying life a lot more these days, although her life only consists of
about 6-7 hours a day because she’s asleep the rest of the time. She recognizes our faces and voices, which is
exciting for us, too! If Esme and I are
hanging out and Ryan comes into the room, she will turn to look at him and
smile. She is always so happy and
excited when she wakes up in the morning that she’s kicking her legs, smiling,
and cooing – such a nice way to start the day.
She doesn’t
hate tummy time as much as she used to and her body is getting much
stronger. She can hold her neck up for
longer periods of time and is beginning to use her arms to help hold herself
up, although her arms are still the weakest part of her body. Ryan shakes his
head and says she’s “weak as a little girl” (apparently it’s an inside joke
between him and Homer Simpson). We’ve
started using a rolled up blanket under her chest to give her a little extra
support during tummy time and she seems to appreciate the help. Esme’s legs have gotten really strong; she
can stand up on them with only a little help for balance. We think it’s pretty cool, but then we’re
easily impressed. She loves to be moved,
bounced, rocked, etc. (what baby doesn’t?!), and when she’s on our laps she’s
taken to jumping J
getting strong!
she loves her sea creatures mobile
Esme recently discovered that she has hands, and that they’re good for more than just slobbering on. She will grasp things that we put into her hands (like the rattle I often give her and pretend like she knows what to do with it.) Lately, she’s been fidgeting with her hands and just showing much more interest in their existence in general.
We’ve taken
Esme on a couple of outings in the last month.
When she was 7 weeks old, Ryan went to Manhattan to talk to a group of
parents at a theatre program for kids who stutter and Esme and I came along. She got to meet some of Ryan’s colleagues,
one of whom also had a brand new daughter who was just 5 hours younger than
Esme. The theatre was down the street
from the High Line (old, elevated train tracks that have been turned into a
garden/walkway/outdoor hangout), so we took Esme to check that out as well.
We also spent a Saturday, May 12th,
in the city seeing some sites with our wonderful Canadian friends Deryk &
Maria and their two kiddos Emilija & Neven …Esme made friends right away.
(Ryan said we have to stipulate their nationality because they’re our only
Canadian friends). Esme was a great
traveler during her trips to the city and put up with a lot of craziness from
her parents. She’s a little trooper.

We told Emilija that babies use the "baby handshake" to say hi
Stopped by Levain's for their incredible giant, gooey cookies. SOOO good!
Most of all, Esme’s just the cutest little piece of our family and spends her days
entertaining her parents.
